Then and now: A call to artists

To Local Artists and Art Enthusiasts:

Inspired by our ever-changing world and our ever-changing spaces, River Arts is seeking artists to create artwork based on our area's historic photography to create their unique vision of that space. We invite you to be a part of our exhibition that explores how Morrisville, Lamoille County and the surrounding area have changed over the years through a nostalgic look at the past. River Arts Gallery is looking for submissions of artwork that reflect a specific space in its current state, a historic view of the space, or a vision of the future.

How to become a part of this exhibition:

  1. Create a letter of Interest (due July 21st, 2024): Below are some inspirational historic pictures and landmarks from Morrisville and the surrounding areas.  Artists are invited to choose one of these or another for inspiration, find its location, and recreate the image in its current state, a historic view of the space, or a vision of the future. Artists are encouraged to source their own verified images and/or research our provided images to understand where they existed (or still exist) in our community.

EXAMPLE : The River Arts Building. An artist can submit a Letter of Interest based on this historic building built in 1847 as the original Peoples Academy. Choose a historic picture of this building and submit the image with a short description of how you would like to create an art piece based on this building or its function. The artist could propose whatever best reflects their knowledge or connectivity to this space such as a collage design, a textile piece, or a realistic or stylized painting of the space. Perhaps a repurposed old wooden desk lid that hangs on the wall and opens to a collage of artwork as celebrated today in the space….the possibilities are endless!

  2. Format: All artwork needs to be in formatted for hanging on a wall and be at least 18”x18” and no bigger than 48”x36”.  Mediums such as painting, pastel, collage, photography, watercolor, and textile will be considered. Please give estimated dimensions of your creation you intend to make, or if you have created something already that fits this exhibition parameters, you are welcome to submit a picture of your artwork with a reference photo.

  3. You will hear back on July 23rd, 2024 for next steps. We hope to include as many submissions as possible, but for space limitations and breadth of artwork submitted, we may need to limit participation.

  4. Chosen Submissions will be due for delivery at River Arts by October 21st, 2024.

  5. Then and Now Exibition will open on October 28th, 2024, with a reception on Thursday, November 7th from 5:30-7:30pm

Send your Letter of Interest and a reference photo to stephanie@riverartsvt.org by July 21st, 2024.
