Listening Outside the Lines is an oral history project organized by the Lamoille Art & Justice Project. The mission of this project is to document and retell the history of *PGM communities from the perspective of the silenced and marginalized using a counter-storytelling framework.

For the past few months, River Arts has been helping to support Listening Outside the Lines, an oral history project organized by the Lamoille Art & Justice Project. Twelve individuals told their stories with Listening Outside the Lines and shared their unique perspectives as people of color living in Vermont. This summer narrators are pairing with local artists to transform their narratives into music, poetry, dance, and visual art.

River Arts is excited announce that we received a $5000 Vermont Humanities grant to help fund the creation of these artworks that help center a conversation about equity and justice in our community. We are excited to host the culmination of these works in an exhibition and event in early 2022.

The Lamoille Art and Justice project still needs help to fully fund their vision for Listening Outside the Lines.

By donating directly to the Lamoille Art and Justice GoFundMe, your support will fund 2 group processing spaces with VT-based training psychotherapist Courtney “Coco” Casper, sound editing of the interviews for the eventual exhibit, artwork by and mentorship hours for student Maddy Ziminsky, and continued healing efforts for the PGM community within this project.

*The Lamoille Art and Justice Project adopts the term “People of the Global Majority,” or PGM, as an alternative to BIPOC (1) to honor the fact that indigenous, brown, and black people make up the majority of the global population, (2) to decenter whiteness, and (3) to reject the “othering” or “minoritizing” of PGM in our language and communities.

Vermont Humanities seeks to engage all Vermonters in the world of ideas, foster a culture of thoughtfulness, and inspire a lifelong love of reading and learning.
