In this class we’ll discuss various stitches and methods of slow stitching to create patches to extend the life of your clothes and/or to create a stitch journal. We’ll also discuss various techniques to create artful patches for your journal or clothes. We’ll discuss the benefits of hand yoga for your hand health and practice non-dominant hand stitching for brain health. At the end of the six-week workshop, we will have a hand-stitched patch exchange.

My name is Martha Evelyn Dunbar (she/her)and I’m a Slow stitch, meditative stitch artist. I primarily use bib overalls as my canvas. I love creating and wearing visible art and the ecological bonus of making loved clothes last by visible mending. My decoratively stitched bib overalls are my revolt to the fast fashion industry’s assault on the planet.
I’ve found slow stitching to be a fabulous way to combat the anxieties associated with the fast pace of modern-day life. It’s a way to find balance. As a retired biologist, I use slow stitching to keep an embroidered nature journal on my overalls as well.
