Remembrance, an exhibit featuring work by Athena Petra Tasiopoulos and Nina Dubois, will be on display in the Copley Common Room at River Arts November 1, 2018-January 9, 2019. An artist talk and opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 8 from 5-7pm.
Tasiopoulos is a mixed media collage artist and fine art photographer. Originally from Pennsylvania, Athena studied photography at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Athena describes herself as a collector of second hand images – primarily ‘cabinet card’ portrait photography and figure studies from the late 19th – early 20th Century. “My imagination is continuously lured by the mystery of found photographs – ‘instant relatives’ discarded and forgotten in antique stores. It is as if these souls exist in limbo – simultaneously trapped yet saved within photography. I find myself feeling compassion for them. By re-inventing the portrait, I aim to disjoint my subjects from an antiquated identity, allowing them to transcend the constraints of time and place.” – Athena Petra Tasiopoulos.
Dubois is an artist, feminist, and educator living in Vermont. She graduated from Goddard College with a B.A. in Arts Education and teaches at a therapeutic high school in Poultney, Vermont. Dubois works in assemblage, flash poetry, painting, and collage in an effort to investigate history, text, and place. Real and imagined. Personal and political. She has come to know art as the manifestation of an internal process – “When I make something I am actively exploring issues from media, text, and the constructed environment, especially as it relates to women.” Dubois has shown her work in a number of solo and group exhibitions including New City Galerie Burlington, Vermont, Chandler Center for the Arts Randolph, Vermont, Studio Place Arts Barre, Vermont, Artistree Gallery South Pomfret, Vermont and Castleton Downtown Gallery Rutland, Vermont.
Join River Arts in celebrating their work on Thursday, November 8th, from 5-7pm for an Artist Talk and Reception. Free admission and refreshments, cash bar.
