A Life In Art – Catherine “Catchi” Childs
July 25 @ 9:00 am - September 25 @ 4:00 pm
Exhibiting at the Morrisville Town Offices
Catherine “Catchi” Childs was born on Long Island, NY in 1920. One of her favorite childhood
memories and early artistic influences was the time she posed as a model for the “Oz” children,
for the “Wizard of Oz” book series. The book series was being illustrated by John R. Neill who
lived next door. Later, at the age of twelve, with her mother’s encouragement, she developed
an interest in drawing and painting.
While in New York City during the 1950’s Catchi studied with the abstract expressionist painter
Hans Hoffman and figurative painter Leon Kroll. Her work is in numerous private collections
and at Hofstra University. During the course of her long and productive career Catchi exhibited
in galleries throughout the United States and Europe.
“To me, painting is one of the most highly personalized forms of self expression. I feel as if I am
creating a symphony – with each instrument representing a color in the spectrum. When they
are in harmony, beautiful music is created in the painting.”
“I believe very strongly if the artist really has a deep feeling for the arts, has taken the time to
learn the fundamentals of their trade and has an inner ability or talent, they can bring pleasure
and insight to the viewer and the community.”
River Arts is pleased and honored to be exhibiting this sample of Catchi’s work. Her family has
generously donated her remaining artworks to River Arts. For purchase inquiry, please contact
