Notes from the Board - Let’s Talk About the Board
Let’s talk About the Board… When I talk to people about being on the board of an organization, I sometimes hear a person say , “I could never be on a board. I do not have enough money to contribute, or I have nothing to add.” This is a common misconception.
Board members bring diversity to an organization. Each member brings their personality and their abilities with them when they join. Some contribute money, some contribute their skills through their education and jobs, some contribute their boundless energy. The one thing they have in common is a belief in the organization they are connected with. The greater the diversity on a board, the better perspective an organization can have from all angles, socio-economic, race, gender, education, skill set and talent. As a result of the guidance from our board members, River Arts has grown to serve our community better, thinking up new ways to connect with our community through art and provide Arts for Everyone.
I joined the board of River Arts for this reason. Its mission is to bring art to everyone in the community. It focuses on many forms of art, offering music, writing, poetry, dance, summer kids’ programs and workshops. Some board members have been on the board since its conception, others have just joined, some are old, some are young, all of them are blending their expertise with others to ensure River Arts remains viable. When a new member joins the board that person adds another dimension and expertise. As more people join the board it brings new life, meaning new ideas, new, a larger reach.
We are looking for new board members. You could be the one who never thought they could be part of an organization. We want you to speak up, raise your hand and join this dynamic group of people. Why? Because for a board to be successful, it constantly needs new perspectives. Boards can get complacent, unaware of blindspots on how best to serve all our communities.
Perhaps you or your family has benefitted from the programs we offer. Maybe you have hung in the background and secretly wished you could help. Now is the time to join. We need your energy, your ideas, and your commitment to help River Arts remain an organization that offers art for everyone. Call or email River Art’s… our friendly staff will welcome your call.
