Artist Statement
I started to take art seriously when I turned 50 though I always doodled and sketched, mostly horses. (What 15 yo girl doesn’t love horses!) I decided, since I was 50 and didn’t have my whole life ahead of me, to focus on one medium, watercolors, at the time I had no idea what a difficult medium that was! I have fiddled with pastels and acrylics, but water colors are the medium I truly love for the depth of color and luminosity that can be achieved. Lately I’ve skinnied down to using graphite as my studio is a cutting board on my lap. (I live on my boat and space is limited) I don’t have any formal education in art, just constant repetition which has produced a prodigious pile of rejects. That being said, I love making an image come to life on a piece of paper, I’m thrilled when it all comes together. I feel that if I can put an image on paper and make it look more or less like the subject matter, anyone can! It’s something I can get lost in, I can turn my back on the world with all its problems and create something beautiful.
