THE LYRIC ESSAY

Great class, just a few spaces left:

We’ll begin with what we might all comfortably agree is an “essay” and then progress into the now murkier waters of this genre where innovative writers are creating new models for what an essay can do, and still be an essay. Participants should be ready for a rigorous class of reading and critically examining recent work from accomplished authors, as well as engaging in the creation of their own versions of “next American essay.” Expect lively discussion, raised eyebrows and blazing pencils.

Julia Shipley is a poet and freelance writer. Her essays have won the Ralph Nading Hill Award, been nominated for a Pushcart award, and been published in Vermont Life, Small Farmers Journal, Vermont’s Local Banquet and Alimentum, among others. She is currently at work on a book of lyric, personal, and traditional essays about small scale agriculture.
